Africa’s extraordinary green hydrogen potential

December 21, 2022

On December 20, the report "Africa's Extraordinary Green Hydrogen Potential" was formally delivered to the partners. It analysed the potential of solar energy in four African hubs (southern Africa, Egypt, Mauritania, Morocco) for the production of green hydrogen. Through the installation of 1230 GW of new photovoltaic plants, the annual production could reach 50 million tons by 2035.
This production capacity exceeds domestic demand and is therefore capable of supplying the global market as well, meeting more than a third of Africa's current energy consumption and reducing carbon dioxide emissions in Africa by 40%.
Thanks to the progressive reduction in the cost of electrolysers and to the low cost of solar electricity, the green hydrogen produced in these areas will cost no more than €2/kg, finally becoming competitive.
